Heart Shaped Pizza Rolls
Valentine's Day is just around the corner and you know what that means? It's officially heart shaped baked goods season! Oh and we're not going sweet this time.
Let's spice it up with a Cheesy, Spicy, Heart Shaped Jalapeno Pizza. Because, why not!
I know chocolates, sweets, cakes etc. etc. are what our minds automatically think of when someone says Valentine's. Butttt, I thought, let's spice it up this year and go the savory route and still make it look cute. And that's how these heart shaped pizza rolls were born.
So, let's brake these rolls down...
The base of these rolls are made with a homemade pizza dough. Then, we roll out the dough into a rectangle, and spread it with a homemade tomato sauce. Next, we sprinkle a whole lot of cheese. Then, we top it with tamed jalapeno. Every bite is packed with so much flavor.
Feel free to add any other toppings you wish too; Chicken, Pepperoni, Pineapple, Mushrooms, Onions, literally anything you like on a pizza.
Once we settle on the toppings, comes the tricky part.
How to get the perfect heart shape?
Now, I'm not gonna deny it -- these rolls did lose their heart shape a little bit in the oven. Buttttt, I feel like it still looks pretty close to one? Yayy or nayy?
To get the heart shape, once you've added all the toppings,
starting with the long side, roll the dough up tightly (it should look like a Swiss Roll once done).
cut the dough into 16 even cylinders
place two of the cut cylinders side by side (they must touch each other in the middle) on a baking pan, with the swirls facing up
use your hands to pull the outer most layer on the bottom of each cylinder to form a V shape
tightly press/pinch the dough layers touching each other in order to glue them together
If these steps were hard to follow, watch the quick video below!
How to serve these rolls?
You can either serve them as they are (because they're delicious on their own) or top with some mayonnaise/garlic dip, fresh basil and red pepper flakes. The latter is what I would recommend.

Heart Shaped Pizza Rolls
Prep Time: 1 hour and 40 minutes hours (excludes dough rising time)
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours
Serves: 8 Heart Shaped Rolls
1 and 1/3 cups warm water (simple microwave room temperature water 40 seconds)
2 and 1/4 tsp quick rise yeast
1 tbsp granulated sugar
2 tbsp + 1 tbsp olive oil (divided)
3/4 tsp salt
3 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (sifted)
2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup onion diced
1 tsp chopped basil
1 tsp chopped garlic
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1.5 cup diced tomatoes, blended for 1 minute
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp granulated sugar
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
2 cubes of boursin's garlic and herbs cheese
3/4 cup quartered mezetta's tamed jalapeno rings
First, prepare the pizza dough. In a large bowl, mix the warm water, yeast and sugar. cover and set aside for 5 minutes. Then, add 2 tbsp olive oil and salt and mix well. Next, add flour little by little while mixing using a hand/stand mixer with a dough hook attachment (if you do not have a mixer, you can use a wooden spoon)
Once all the flour has been added, continue to knead the dough with the mixer or by hand for 4 to 5 minutes until no more flour pockets remain and a slightly heavy but soft dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and grease the same bowl you were using with 1 tbsp olive oil. Place the dough back in the greased bowl and toss a few times to coat all sides with oil.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm environment to rise for about 1.5 hours. To create a warm environment, you can preheat the oven to 200 °F; turn oven off once preheated; then, place covered bowl inside oven with the door slightly open.
While the dough rises, prepare the tomato sauce. In a saucepan over medium heat, mix the olive oli, onion, basil, garlic and red pepper flakes (for about 2 to 3 minutes). Next, add the blended tomato, salt and sugar. Mix well. Then, let the mixture simmer for 30 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and let cool.
Now, back to the pizza dough. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch down to release air and transfer to a well floured surface. Next, roll out the dough into a 19'' x 14''rectangle.
Evenly spread the prepared and cooled tomato sauce over the rolled dough. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese on top followed by garlic and herb cheese. Finally, top with quartered jalapeno rings.
Prepare two 8'' x 12'' baking pans with parchment paper.
Now, get back to the rolled dough. Starting with the long side (19'' side), roll the dough up tightly (it should look like a Swiss Roll once done). Next, cut the dough into 16 even cylinders.
To create a heart shape, place two of the cut cylinders side by side (they must touch each other in the middle), with the swirls facing up, on the prepared baking pan. Then, use your hands to pull the outer most layer on the bottom of each cylinder to form a V shape (refer to the complete steps provided above + a video tutorial) . Repeat with the rest until you come up with 8 heart shapes in total.
Transfer the prepared hearts into the baking pans (you should be able to fit 4 in each). Then, refrigerate the prepared heart shaped pizza rolls for 20 minutes. During this time, preheat the oven to 400° F.
Bake the rolls for 20 minutes until golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes. Top with mayo, fresh basil and red pepper flakes when serving.
